  • I’ve just finished setting up exactpy what you describe (Synology NAS and Debian mini PC server) and it is working so well. Why do you need a more powerful NAS? If you use it for just storage you won’t really be falling short of NAS compute power.

I considered adding the drives directly to the mini PC as well, but I’m happy I’ve kept the Synology for the best of both worlds. Synology makes it so much easier to share the storage, set up reverse proxy, provide constant 2 way sync with my online cloud WebDAV service, etc.

  • I don’t understand how social media is seen as the only source of enriching content. I have loads of stuff to talk to people about without social media.

The only social media I’m on is Lemmy.

    • follow news via RSS. Use an app that let’s you blacklist content you don’t want to see.
    • follow interests via RSS (gaming news, tech news, movie news, biking news… Whatever you like)
    • listen to podcasts
    • watch movies and TV shows
    • read books
    • follow sports
    • pick a hobby or skill of interest
    • talk to people about their interests

There are tons of ways to keep up with things. Social media isnt the only option… Unless you particularly want follow social media trash specifically. If that’s the case, then you’re welcome to join any social media you want. You won’t die. Use fake details, burner emails, burner phone sims if you want. The world won’t end if one person goes back to contributing to data mining and consuming algorithm trash. You’ve got to live in your social circle and that’s more important than what a bunch of people on Lemmy think.

  • Why? Did you get stuck in a washing machine yourself at some point?

On a more serious note, I remember reading an article once about this phenomenon. About how it’s not some widespread latent sex fantasy to fuck step-siblings. Rather it’s an odd reflection of how algorithms poison the content in this attention economy. The more unusual the content is (without being outright objectionable), then the more attention it gets for being so unusual. That starts a wave of new creations from content creators to jump on the bandwagon for the popularity of the content that seems to be getting traction. Then pretty soon anyone not catering to this “demand” is an outlier and loses out, so eventually this theme of content floods the entire ecosystem.

  • My eyes are open and I can still see your comment on screen, but I can also “see” a clear picture of a red apple on a bright sunny day elsewhere in my mind. I can’t explain how I can “see” 2 images simultaneously, but it often means I miss what someone is saying when talking to me, because I’ve started concentrating on my mental image instead.
