What @BCsven@lemmy.ca said, anytime you add or remove or update your system snapper does a little snapshot which makes it incredible easy to boot back into a system that works. BTRFS makes it so easy, as compared to EXT4. And yeah Timeshift is still just as valid I guess but unless you make timeshift backups every times you install or remove something, it’s hard to compare the two.

I don’t know if you’ve read about atomic distros yet, so here’s a link to that. Personally I’d pick OpenSUSE over Bazzite because I don’t like the idea of updates possibly overwriting anything I install myself that isn’t flatpak/distrobox/homebrew, but that’s not a dealbreaker for many, it’s just a different way of installing software that ensures the operating system doesn’t get packages installed that can make it unstable.
I wouldn’t be too worried using OpenSUSE in particular as it has excellent snapper integration that makes it very easy to roll back any changes made to the system that might cause said instability or inability to even boot to desktop (especially with grub-btrfs set up).

Never mind the comments here on Lemmy, but you really need a hazmat suit to enter the comments on that article. Over 1400 of them, each somehow a different type of phobic. Living up to the nickname “TERF Island”.

The closest to Arch, a rolling cutting edge distro, is probably openSUSE Tumbleweed. openSUSE has excellent snapper integration that takes a snapshot before and after you touch zypper, so it’s easy to undo changes that might ruin your system. CachyOS also has that same great snapper integration, but that’s still Arch.

If I had money to spend on FOSS projects, this is definitely one of the ones I’d support. I likely will from next month onwards.

Bottles is a very convenient way of managing individual wine prefixes. With its GUI it’s very easy to install dependencies and change settings. I can highly recommend checking it out. I use it not just for programs, but also games as it’s just easier to use than having to use winetricks.

Until 2021 when I got my new PC, I still had a bluray/cd/dvd burner, although I don’t recall ever using it for burning anything. I guess that era is finally getting laid to rest.
Also, way back when it was a requirement to burn CD’s and DVD’s in order to install operating systems like linux, I don’t ever recall using a CD-RW disc. I guess I thought of them a bit like potions in skyrim where by the end of the game I end up with hundreds of them and then never using them when I really needed to.

One of the few games based on the Quake 2 engine. Which is a shame, I quite liked the chunky feel of it.

That’s certainly a concern for some, but I’m using like 30 GB for all the things I’ve installed, which is a lot (12 (flatpak-system), 76 (flatpak-user)) but that’s on a 2 TB drive, which amounts to like 1½% of the total available space. I don’t think that’s a bad trade.

I barely remember the story of SiN, but I do remember enjoying it when it came out. That whole “guy in the chair”/mission control shtick is probably why I hold this game in the same category as Deus Ex in my head, even though they’re very different.
