I think some parents feel a bit disempowered about how to actually make their kids healthier online.
All of the time restrictions (and more) being proposed can already be done with parental controls that are built into devices now, and have been for years.
The state setting digital curfews is a ridiculous level of overreach. The OSA and now this, we are heading in a dangerous direction.
Not a sneaky way to get identity verification into every platform at all. Completely can’t see what you’re doing there.
How are curfews legal
I know the UK govt often tends to be quite authoritarian in its measures (like the proposed compulsory toothbrushing in schools, the cancelled complete tobacco ban), but in this case having a govt enforced time limit for kids might truly be the thing that’s needed to get them outdoors/reading again. (Unless they just turn from TikTok to TV)
my thing is the government needs to be authoritarian with companies on behalf of the people and very liberal with people directly. corporation are not people and are not subject to the human rights and freedoms. its only way to curtail exploitation and ensure those types of actions can have consequences.
When was there compulsory toothbrushing in schools declared? Schools have been asked to teach children how to brush their teeth (which is something that used to be taught in post wat schools up until 1980s). Not compel children to brush teeth.
Iirc Labour had it in their manifesto(?)
The sentence in their manifesto was: “We will also introduce a supervised tooth-brushing scheme for 3-to-5 year olds, targeting the areas of highest need.”
Scheme. Of supervised brushing for pre-school children in some areas. Far from compulsory. Looking at the reported comments by politicians like Streeting at the time it was clear this wasn’t compulsory in the way you asserted. (I have to be clear that I’m no Labour supporter. Far from it.)
