Speaking from experience, forcing disabled kids into settings that are not equipped to help them survive, let alone thrive, in education has been a recipe for disaster as it is. I don’t see how doing more of it will make it any better for the kids.

There is also a huge problem when disabled students are separated from every day children. Part of that problem is in the lack of support seen for disabled in society.
Separate but equal is never really true. But also leads to a lack of understanding between the communities. This among other issues. Allows politicians to safely attack disabled benifits. And get away with lack of funding to SEND schools.
As a community. We are currently under attack. There are multiple posts atm on this subject. But at the time of writing any in non disabled centric communities. have 0 comments.
Yeah, I totally get your point here and I agree. I am also emotionally traumatised by the damage that has been done to my SEN children being shoehorned into a school system that does not have the funding, facilities, training or compassion to treat them as people, much less to help them fulfil their potential.
Like @icerunner_origin@startrek.website I speak from experience when I say this is nothing to do with whats best for kids and all about cutting costs. Forcing kids who need an EHCP into mainstream schools and/or denying them specialist support will help no one - not the pupils, not the staff and not the school.
But its SOP for this red tory government - they’ve already said they’re going to target disabled people claiming PIP and now they’re going to target disabled people in education.
You might think this is because the disabled population have an outlandishly large amount of money allocated to them and its fair that they are targeted. They don’t. The reason the disabled are always the first targeted by any ruler is because that ruler knows that the general population don;t give two shits what happens to disabled people.
There’ll be no protests from society about this in the way we would see if this was an environmental issue or a race issue or a gender issue so for a politician this is a win-win.

So there will be more funds from the central pot for councils to fund supporting SEND at mainstream school, right? RIGHT?
Honestly this is a dumb a decision as I have seen so far from this government. SEND in mainstream schools already costs a huge amount of a councils budget and is massively underfunded and under resourced as a consequence.
All it does is lower every pupils attainment not just the SEND kids who also have an unsuitable environment forced on them.
Couple this with successive governments making it harder to get a proper EHCP if they haven’t started the process in Primary School means there are far more kids than on the offiical SEND list that should be getting proper support.
Whats actually needed is picking a mainstream school in each area and converting it to a dedicated SEND school as a minimum. Then moving those who would benefit to that school while moving those who wouldn’t out. Most areas have more than enough kids for this to work. Its not going to completely solve the problem but it would be a big improvement on the shit show we have now.
