There’s not much to it. You just use the determinate installer. Works great.

For simple use cases… Linux can actually be a lot more hands off and just works.

It’s actually pretty great for the grandparent use case.

I’ve been with Fedora for awhile now because I like the project and how it pushes things forward. Changed to Silverblue and never returned.

Now I’m using Bluefin because I like the little tweaks on top of Silverblue. Would recommend.

Have you looked? Almost all software on flathub (definitely the majority) lists aarch64 (ARM). So yes, most things work.

Again, proprietary software is the main issue here. Open source software is pretty easy to recompile.

I understand qemu can emulate x86 in those cases, with a performance hit.

Most applications are/can be compiled for arm. You just need the right repo or to compile from source.

Raspberry pi’s are very popular and are arm based already.

You don’t need a translation layer unless the software is proprietary and the vendor isn’t willing to compile for arm.

I’ve already automated Restic with bash scripts and systemd timers but… used to use Vorta with Borg and did like having a GUI.

I do with Mobius and it’s usable. I have a Synology NAS always there at home to sync to though. (Mobius syncs 1-2 hours per day in the background but it’s dynamic and not predictable thanks to Apple).

If I didn’t syncing between iOS devices would probably not work very well.

Yes instant syncing with iOS requires you to open the app if you can’t wait. I’ll often open Mobius if I’m working back and forth to make sure it syncs instantly.

You could probably create a Tailscale vpn network (or something similar) and setup Syncthing to use the Tailscale address of your laptop.

Obsidian + Syncthing is what I’ve settled on. Not perfect, but the best I’ve used.

Works great. Just remember syncing is not the same as a backup. Make sure you do backups!

That’s not what passkeys are in many implementations. Look up Google/microsoft/apple passkeys. That’s what people mean when they say passkeys.

You’re thinking of a device like a Yubikey, which is a great device.

Passkey is on your device though?

It doesn’t kill the point of 2fa. It’s something you have… you have your device. If you didn’t you wouldn’t have the TOTP code.

The something you know (password) is much more likely to be breached and stolen. That is what isn’t tied to your device. You probably want the second factor to be linked to just the devices you have.

I use KeepPassXC for desktop totp codes. I’m sure there’s an Android app to use with it. (I use KeePassium on iOS). Edit: maybe look into KeePass2Android

You can sync with Syncthing for offline. I keep the database in the cloud but with a key on each device (not in the cloud) that’s needed to open it.
